Alban Hoxha: The End of an Era, the Beginning of a New Legacy at Partizani

From Cërrik to Albanian Football Immortality

By Elite Sport Vizion. By Albano Kolonjari ·

For more than a decade, whenever FK Partizani needed a leader, a match-winning save, or a moment of courage, one man stood between the posts: Alban Hoxha.

Now, after more than 20 years in professional football, the legendary goalkeeper has officially brought his playing career to an end. But while one chapter closes, another begins. Hoxha will immediately remain at the club he helped rebuild, taking over as goalkeeping coach of the Red Bulls.

It is a transition that feels both natural and symbolic—a club legend passing on his knowledge to the next generation.

From Cërrik to Albanian Football Immortality

Born on 23 November 1987 in Cërrik, Albania, Alban Hoxha developed through the youth academy of Dinamo Tirana, where he began laying the foundations of an exceptional career.

His early years included spells with Apolonia Fier, Kastrioti, and Besa Kavajë, experiences that shaped him into one of Albania's most dependable goalkeepers before destiny called him to Partizani in the summer of 2013.

Few could have predicted that the move would become one of the most iconic partnerships in Albanian football history.

The Face of Modern Partizani

When Hoxha arrived at Partizani, the club was rebuilding its identity.

Over the next 13 seasons, he became much more than a goalkeeper.

He became:

Captain. Dressing-room leader. Defensive organizer. Fan favorite. One of the greatest players ever to wear the famous red shirt.

His leadership transformed Partizani into one of Albania's strongest clubs once again, helping guide the team back to domestic glory.

During his unforgettable spell with the club, he won:

2 Kategoria Superiore titles (2018–19, 2022–23) 1 Albanian Super Cup (2019)

Beyond the trophies, Hoxha became the emotional heartbeat of the club, respected by teammates, opponents and supporters alike.

The Record That Defined an Era

Every great goalkeeper has a defining achievement.

For Alban Hoxha, it came during the 2014–15 Kategoria Superiore season.

Week after week, opponents simply could not beat him.

He went an astonishing 1,084 consecutive league minutes without conceding a goal, setting a new all-time Albanian league record.

The achievement broke Bujar Gogunja's legendary 30-year-old record of 1,037 minutes and remains one of the greatest individual accomplishments in Albanian football history.

The milestone carried deep personal meaning, as Hoxha dedicated the record to his son and to the memory of his late wife, making it one of the most emotional moments of his career.

Albania's Best Footballer

His remarkable consistency did not go unnoticed.

In 2014, Hoxha was voted Albanian Footballer of the Year, becoming one of the very few goalkeepers from the domestic championship ever to receive the nation's highest individual football honor.

It was recognition not only of his incredible performances but also of his influence on Albanian football during an era when most major awards were dominated by players competing abroad.

European Nights That Made History

While Hoxha built his reputation in the Albanian Superliga, one unforgettable European night elevated his status even further.

During the 2016–17 UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign against Ferencváros, Partizani faced a dramatic penalty shootout.

Hoxha first stepped up to score an audacious Panenka penalty.

He then returned to his goal and produced one of the greatest shootout performances in Albanian club football history, saving three penalties to send Partizani through.

It remains one of the defining moments in the club's modern European history.

Serving the National Team

Hoxha also proudly represented the Albania national team, earning four official senior international appearances.

Although he often served as the deputy to Etrit Berisha, his professionalism made him a trusted member of the national squad for years.

His greatest international milestone came in 2016, when he was selected for Albania's historic UEFA European Championship squad—the country's first appearance at a major international tournament.

A Career Filled with Silverware

Across more than two decades as a professional, Hoxha collected an impressive list of honors:

Kategoria Superiore (4)

2007–08 – Dinamo Tirana 2009–10 – Dinamo Tirana 2018–19 – FK Partizani 2022–23 – FK Partizani

Albanian Super Cup (1)

2019 – FK Partizani

Albanian Footballer of the Year (2014) Albanian league record: 1,084 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal A New Mission Begins

Retirement from playing does not mean saying goodbye to Partizani.

Following changes within the coaching staff, the club immediately entrusted Hoxha with the role of goalkeeping coach, ensuring that his experience, leadership and winning mentality remain inside the dressing room.

He has already begun preparing for life on the sidelines, completing coaching courses organized by the Albanian Football Association and making his debut on the technical staff during Partizani's 3–1 friendly victory over Vora.

For many supporters, seeing Hoxha on the bench rather than between the posts will take time to get used to.

But his mission remains unchanged: helping Partizani win.

More Than a Goalkeeper

Statistics tell only part of Alban Hoxha's story.

He was the goalkeeper who inspired confidence, the captain who led by example, the penalty hero who delivered unforgettable European nights, and the record-breaker who redefined excellence in Albanian football.

Now, as he begins a new journey from the touchline, Partizani is not simply gaining a goalkeeping coach.

The club is preserving the legacy of one of the greatest players in its history.

For Alban Hoxha, football may have brought the final whistle as a player—but his influence on Partizani is only entering its next chapter.
