Ancelotti: “This Is the Beginning, Not the End” for Brazil After World Cup Exit

Brazil's dream of lifting a sixth FIFA World Cup trophy came to a painful end after a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16, but head coach Carlo Ancelotti insists the loss should mark the beginning of a new era rather than the end of one.

The Seleção suffered their earliest World Cup elimination since 1990 as Norway, inspired by a clinical Erling Haaland, secured a historic place in the quarter-finals. Despite the disappointment, Ancelotti remained optimistic about the future, stressing that Brazil's rebuilding process is only just beginning.

"A defeat is the beginning of a new adventure," Ancelotti said after the match. "We have to keep improving, find new ideas. It is not the end; it is the start of a new cycle."

Ancelotti Looks Toward 2030

Having signed a contract that runs through the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the Italian tactician made it clear that his focus is now on building a stronger, younger Brazil capable of returning to the top of world football.

Although visibly disappointed, Ancelotti believed Brazil had been the better side for much of the match.

"I think we deserved to win the game. We controlled it for around 70 minutes, but Haaland ultimately made the difference."

The former Real Madrid, AC Milan and Bayern Munich manager only took charge of Brazil in May 2025, meaning this was his first World Cup leading the five-time champions. During that short period, he has been tasked with restoring confidence after a difficult qualifying campaign while introducing a fresh tactical identity.

A Tournament Filled With Challenges

Brazil's campaign was far from straightforward.

Even before the tournament began, Ancelotti lost several key players through injury, including Estêvão, Rodrygo and Éder Militão. During the World Cup itself, creative stars Raphinha and Lucas Paquetá also suffered injuries, forcing constant tactical adjustments.

Despite those setbacks, Ancelotti refused to use injuries as excuses and instead promised that the defeat would strengthen Brazil's long-term project.

"We will manage this defeat by bringing fresh impetus to our work and the assessment of the players. We will continue improving and searching for new ideas."

Marquinhos Accepts Responsibility

Brazil captain Marquinhos shouldered the responsibility following the elimination and urged supporters to remain patient with the next generation of Brazilian talent.

"I take the blame. As captain, and together with the senior players, we have to take responsibility so the next generation can work with a clear mind."

The experienced defender emphasized that rebuilding a championship-winning team takes time.

"They have four years to work toward achieving great things at the next World Cup."

Neymar Hints at an Emotional Farewell

One of the most emotional moments after the final whistle came from Neymar.

Returning to the stadium where he made his Brazil debut in 2010, the veteran forward delivered a brief but powerful message as he left the pitch.

"I tried, I tried. Now it's over. I started here, I finished here."

His comments have fueled speculation that the 2026 World Cup may have been his final appearance for Brazil on football's biggest stage.

A New Era Begins

While Norway marches into the quarter-finals behind the brilliance of Erling Haaland, Brazil now faces difficult questions about its future. A new generation must emerge, fresh tactical ideas must be developed, and the Seleção must once again build a squad capable of competing for football's greatest prize.

Carlo Ancelotti, however, remains confident that Brazil is heading in the right direction.

"I think the work we've done has been good. Football is like this; sometimes you have to manage the sadness of defeat. I am used to this."

For the five-time world champions, the journey to the 2030 FIFA World Cup has officially begun.
