Arijon Ibrahimović Returns to Bayern—but Will He Choose Germany or Kosovo?

Arijon Ibrahimović has begun a new chapter in his career with Bayern Munich. The 20-year-old footballer of Kosovo-Albanian heritage featured in the German champions’ opening pre-season friendly ahead of the 2026–27 campaign.

Bayern suffered a 2–1 defeat against third-division side SV Wehen Wiesbaden. Ibrahimović entered at halftime and played the entire second half under head coach Vincent Kompany.

The hosts took the lead through Ibrahim Ati Allah in the 10th minute. Tom Bischof equalized from the penalty spot in the 57th minute, but Lukas Schleimer scored Wiesbaden’s winning goal in the 83rd.

Ibrahimović delivered a quiet but composed performance. He operated mainly as an attacking midfielder behind the striker, combining with players such as Bischof and João Palhinha.

The talented youngster demonstrated good technique, close control and accuracy with his short passing. However, he was unable to produce a decisive final ball against Wiesbaden’s compact and disciplined defence.

It was Ibrahimović’s first appearance since returning from his loan spell at Heidenheim. Last season, he made 34 appearances across all competitions, recording two goals and five assists.

Bayern Munich has now decided to integrate him fully into the first-team squad. His contract has been extended until June 30, 2028, and he will wear the number 22 shirt this season.

Germany or Kosovo?

Ibrahimović’s future at international level remains a major topic of interest, particularly among Albanian and Kosovan football supporters.

He currently represents Germany at Under-21 level, having previously played for several of the country’s youth teams. However, he has yet to make his senior international debut.

That means Ibrahimović remains eligible to represent Kosovo. No final decision concerning his senior international future has been publicly announced.

If he continues with Germany and earns a place in the senior squad, he could eventually play alongside stars such as Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, Aleksandar Pavlović and Karim Adeyemi.

If he chooses Kosovo, Ibrahimović could join an important generation featuring established players such as Vedat Muriqi, Edon Zhegrova and Amir Rrahmani.

For now, one thing is certain: Arijon Ibrahimović is part of Vincent Kompany’s plans at Bayern Munich.

The major question that remains is whether he will represent Germany or follow his family roots and play for Kosovo at senior international level.
