βIβll continue until December as Argentina head coach, then Iβll probably leave this job. I need to recharge and stop nowβ
Lionel Scaloni has cast serious doubt over his future as Argentina head coach following the heartbreaking 1β0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
βIβll continue as Argentinaβs head coach until December, but then Iβll probably leave the job. I need to stop and recharge,β Scaloni said. π₯ΊππΌ
βThe important thing is to preserve this spirit and the special connection between the Argentine people and the national team. Iβm extremely proud of this group.β
An emotional Scaloni broke down in tears and brought his post-match press conference to an early end.
βPlease bear with meβI donβt know if I can continue,β he said. βTo carry on, you need many thingsβespecially the ability to reset your mind, recharge and build a group like this again.β
Scaloni confirmed that he intends to fulfil his contract, which runs until December 31, 2026, before holding talks with AFA president Claudio Tapia about his final decision.
Appointed as interim coach in August 2018, Scaloni went on to build one of the greatest teams in Argentinaβs history. During his extraordinary eight-year reign, he won:
π Copa AmΓ©rica 2021 π Finalissima 2022 π FIFA World Cup 2022 π Copa AmΓ©rica 2024 π₯ FIFA World Cup 2026
He also guided Argentina through 104 matches, recording 80 victories, 14 draws and only 10 defeatsβan outstanding winning percentage of approximately 77%.
If he officially steps down in January, Scaloni will leave behind an unforgettable legacy: four major trophies, two consecutive World Cup finals and a team that restored Argentina to the summit of world football.
