Lionel Scaloni has cast serious doubt over his future as Argentina head coach following the heartbreaking 1–0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

“I’ll continue as Argentina’s head coach until December, but then I’ll probably leave the job. I need to stop and recharge,” Scaloni said. 🥺👋🏼

“The important thing is to preserve this spirit and the special connection between the Argentine people and the national team. I’m extremely proud of this group.”

An emotional Scaloni broke down in tears and brought his post-match press conference to an early end.

“Please bear with me—I don’t know if I can continue,” he said. “To carry on, you need many things—especially the ability to reset your mind, recharge and build a group like this again.”

Scaloni confirmed that he intends to fulfil his contract, which runs until December 31, 2026, before holding talks with AFA president Claudio Tapia about his final decision.

Appointed as interim coach in August 2018, Scaloni went on to build one of the greatest teams in Argentina’s history. During his extraordinary eight-year reign, he won:
