Croatia Eliminate Panama with Gutsy Victory
The victory carried extra significance for Croatian captain Luka Modrić, who made his 200th international appearance. The legendary midfielder once again demonstrated his class and leadership, helping guide Croatia through a tense encounter on one of football's biggest stages.
Croatia kept their FIFA World Cup 2026™ hopes alive and simultaneously ended Panama's campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory in Group L at Toronto Stadium on Tuesday night.
A second-half strike from substitute Ante Budimir proved to be the difference as Zlatko Dalić's side bounced back from their opening defeat to England and moved within touching distance of a place in the Round of 32.
For Panama, the defeat confirmed their elimination from the tournament despite another spirited performance that deserved far more than the final scoreline suggested.
Panama Shine Early
Panama started brightly and looked the more dangerous side throughout much of the first half.
Their best opportunity arrived in the 23rd minute when José Luis Rodríguez rose highest to meet a cross with a powerful header. Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livaković produced a spectacular save, tipping the effort onto the crossbar and preserving the deadlock.
The Central Americans continued to press forward with confidence, causing problems for the Croatian defense and frustrating the 2018 World Cup finalists.
Budimir Breaks the Deadlock
Croatia emerged with greater urgency after the interval and finally found the breakthrough in the 54th minute.
Josip Stanišić delivered a superb low cross from the right flank and substitute Ante Budimir arrived at the back post to calmly tap home the decisive goal.
The strike transformed the momentum of the match and gave Croatia the advantage they desperately needed.
Just three minutes later, Marco Pašalić came close to doubling the lead. His initial effort was brilliantly saved by Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera before the rebound was fired wide of the target.
Livaković Stands Tall
Despite falling behind, Panama refused to surrender.
The Canaleros continued to push for an equalizer, but time and again they were denied by the outstanding Dominik Livaković, who produced a series of crucial saves to secure Croatia's first victory of the tournament.
Panama's inability to convert their chances ultimately proved costly as their dream of earning a first-ever World Cup point slipped away.
