Canada secured their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory in spectacular fashion, crushing Qatar 6-0 in front of a passionate home crowd at BC Place in Vancouver. Jonathan David stole the show with a brilliant hat-trick, while Cyle Larin, Nathan Saliba, and an own goal from Mohamed Manai completed a historic night for the tournament co-hosts.

The Canadians started aggressively and were rewarded in the 16th minute when Cyle Larin calmly converted a rebound to open the scoring. Jonathan David doubled the advantage in the 29th minute with a stunning volley that flew past Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada.

Things quickly unraveled for Qatar when Homan Ahmed was shown a straight red card after bringing down Tajon Buchanan midway through the first half. Canada immediately capitalized on their numerical advantage, with David scoring his second goal in first-half stoppage time to make it 3-0.

The second half brought more misery for Qatar. Assim Madibo received a red card following a challenge on Ismael Koné, reducing the visitors to nine men. Nathan Saliba added a fourth goal from a superb free-kick before Mohamed Manai inadvertently turned the ball into his own net. Jonathan David then completed his hat-trick deep into stoppage time, sealing a memorable 6-0 victory.

🗣️ Cyle Larin after the match

“We showed the world who Canada is. A lot of players came from nowhere, basically. We showed the fight we have in us and proved that we can perform on the world stage. We are just getting started. Ismael Koné’s injury was emotional for us, but we went back out there and got the job done. Switzerland are next and the job is not finished. We can play even better, and we will keep Koné in our minds and do it for him.”
