The Woman Changing the History of Albanian Weightlifting

By Albano Kolonjari ·

Behind every great champion stands an extraordinary coach. In the case of Enkileda Carja, the name behind her spectacular success is Eglantina Kalemi, a coach widely regarded as the most successful female figure in the history of Albanian weightlifting.

With a long-term vision, exceptional talent-spotting abilities, and a modern training methodology, Kalemi has played a decisive role in transforming Enkileda Carja from a young girl with immense potential into a European and world champion.

Discovering a Talent at the Age of Nine

The success story began when Enkileda was only nine years old. She attended the weightlifting gym in Elbasan simply to accompany her older sister, Marsela Carja, who at the time was one of the most promising young talents and a national U15 champion.

However, Eglantina Kalemi immediately noticed something special in the young girl. Her excellent physical coordination, ability to learn quickly, and strong competitive character convinced the coach that she was witnessing a rare talent.

Without hesitation, Kalemi included Enkileda in her regular training programs, laying the foundation for a partnership that would eventually produce historic achievements for Albanian sport.

The Strategy That Built a Champion

One of Eglantina Kalemi’s greatest strengths throughout her career has been her ability to successfully manage key transitions in the careers of her athletes.

She oversaw Enkileda Carja’s move from the local Elbasan team to the elite Teuta club under the leadership of club president Kreshnik Leka, providing her with ideal conditions for development and competition at the highest levels.

Equally successful was her management of Carja’s transition onto the international stage:

At the European U15 Championships in Chișinău, Carja won three gold medals and set five European records. At the World U17 Championships in Lima, Peru, she became a three-time world champion, making history as the first Albanian weightlifter to win a world title in youth categories. In the Junior (U20) category, Kalemi guided her to European and world medals in Batumi and Ismailia, despite Enkileda still being young enough to compete in lower age groups.

These achievements highlight not only the athlete’s talent but also the coach’s ability to carefully plan every step of her career.

A Philosophy of Success

In her interviews with Albanian sports media, Kalemi has consistently emphasized that success is not built solely on physical strength.

According to her, psychological preparation is just as important as technical training. She has worked tirelessly to help Enkileda develop the same mental toughness and resilience demonstrated by Albanian weightlifting champions such as Briken Calja and Erkand Qerimaj.

“The weight of being the favorite is often heavier than the weight of the barbell.”

This philosophy reflects her approach to elite sports.

Kalemi believes that a true champion must be capable of handling the pressure of high expectations, especially when entering competitions as the overwhelming favorite for the gold medal.

A Pioneer of Women’s Sports in Albania

Eglantina Kalemi’s contribution extends far beyond the success of a single athlete.

She has become one of the most influential figures in the development of women’s sports in Albania. Working alongside the Albanian Weightlifting Federation and community programs supported by the International Olympic Committee, Kalemi has been involved in initiatives designed to introduce more young girls to the sport of weightlifting.

One of the most notable projects is the “Community School” initiative at Betim Muço School in Tirana, where hundreds of girls have had the opportunity to learn about Olympic weightlifting and follow the example set by Albanian champions.

The Woman Changing the History of Albanian Weightlifting

Today, as Enkileda Carja continues to break records and win medals on the international stage, much of the credit belongs to the coach who believed in her from day one.

Eglantina Kalemi has not simply built a champion. She has created a blueprint for success for future generations and demonstrated that with vision, dedication, and relentless hard work, Albania can produce champions capable of competing and triumphing on the world stage.

In the history of Albanian sport, Eglantina Kalemi’s name has already earned its place among the nation’s most influential coaching figures, remaining a symbol of professionalism, passion, and excellence in weightlifting.
