UEFA Champions League

By Elite Sport Vizion ·

CHIȘINĂU, Moldova – KF Egnatia secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw away to FC Petrocub Hîncești in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League First Qualifying Round, producing a resilient performance despite playing the entire second half with ten men.

The Albanian champions overcame a nightmare start and a first-half red card to leave the Zimbru Stadium with a result that keeps qualification firmly in their own hands ahead of next week's decisive return leg in Rrogozhinë.

Dream Start for Petrocub

The Moldovan champions could not have asked for a better opening. Barely a minute into the contest, Petru Popescu stunned Egnatia by scoring inside the opening 60 seconds, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage before the visitors had settled into the match.

The early goal energized the home crowd and forced Egnatia to regroup quickly against an experienced opponent.

Kryeziu Brings Egnatia Back

Despite the early setback, Egnatia gradually found their rhythm and began to control more possession through the midfield.

Their persistence paid off in the 35th minute, when Altin Kryeziu finished confidently after an excellent assist from Guillem Jaime, leveling the score at 1-1 and restoring belief for the Albanian side.

The equalizer rewarded Egnatia's improved performance after recovering from the disastrous opening minute.

Red Card Changes the Match

Just before halftime, the momentum shifted dramatically.

Following a VAR review, midfielder Albano Aleksi was shown a straight red card in stoppage time for a serious foul, reducing Egnatia to ten players for the entire second half.

The dismissal forced head coach Nevil Dede to completely rethink his tactical approach as the visitors prepared to defend with a numerical disadvantage.

Defensive Discipline Earns the Result

Petrocub attempted to capitalize on their extra player after the break, introducing fresh attacking options in search of a winning goal.

However, Egnatia displayed remarkable defensive organization, discipline, and determination, frustrating the Moldovan champions throughout the second half.

Despite sustained pressure and several attacking substitutions from Petrocub, the Albanian champions held firm to secure an important away draw.

Coaches' Reactions

Petrocub head coach Shota Makharadze admitted his side missed an excellent opportunity after playing with a man advantage for the entire second half.

While pleased with his team's aggressive start, he acknowledged that Petrocub struggled to break down Egnatia's compact defensive structure and emphasized that the tie remains completely open.

Meanwhile, Nevil Dede praised his players for their mental strength and resilience.

After conceding in the opening minute and losing a player before halftime, Dede highlighted the discipline and character shown by his squad to preserve the draw, describing the result as an important platform heading into the decisive second leg in Albania.

Qualification to Be Decided in Albania

The tie now moves to Arena Egnatia in Rrogozhinë on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, where Egnatia will have home advantage in front of its supporters.

With the aggregate score level at 1-1, everything remains to play for as both clubs battle for a place in the UEFA Champions League Second Qualifying Round.
