European Football Roars Back into Action with the UEFA Super Cup: Paris Saint-Germain vs Aston Villa

By Elite Sport Vizion ·

European football returns with a spectacular showdown as Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa meet in Salzburg for the 2026 UEFA Super Cup—the traditional curtain-raiser to the new European club season.

On one side stand UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain. Awaiting them are Europa League champions Aston Villa. Both teams will be determined to begin the season by lifting a prestigious European trophy.

PSG Aim to Make History

Luis Enrique’s team are looking to become only the second club in the modern era to win consecutive UEFA Super Cups, following Real Madrid’s triumphs in 2016 and 2017.

Paris Saint-Germain won last season’s edition in Udine after defeating Tottenham Hotspur on penalties. Another victory would give Luis Enrique his 13th trophy since taking charge of the French club in 2023.

PSG enter this match following another extraordinary campaign, crowned by their second consecutive Champions League title.

Aston Villa Chase Another Historic Night

Aston Villa secured their place in the UEFA Super Cup by defeating Freiburg in the Europa League final in Istanbul.

The English club have lifted this trophy once before. In the 1982/83 season, Villa defeated Barcelona 3–1 on aggregate when the competition was played over two legs.

Unai Emery’s team want to prove that their Europa League triumph was no accident. Facing the European champions provides Villa with an excellent opportunity to underline their ambitions on the international stage.

A Champions League Classic Revisited

Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa have met only once before, but that tie produced extraordinary drama.

In the 2024/25 Champions League quarter-finals, the French side advanced with a 5–4 aggregate victory. PSG built a commanding lead, but Aston Villa launched a remarkable comeback that seriously threatened the Parisians’ place in the next round.

The two clubs now meet again, this time with a trophy at stake. The attacking philosophies of Luis Enrique and Unai Emery promise another open and entertaining contest.

Players to Watch

Paris Saint-Germain have strengthened their squad with attacking midfielder Maghnes Akliouche, signed from Monaco. Young talent Senny Mayulu is expected to play another important role, while Khvicha Kvaratskhelia remains one of the greatest threats to the English defence.

Several new arrivals could make their competitive debuts for Aston Villa. Defender Modou Kéba Cissé has joined from LASK, João Gomes has arrived from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Alejandro Garnacho has moved on loan from Chelsea.

Johan Manzambi, one of last season’s Europa League revelations, will miss the match with a knee injury.

Predicted Line-ups

Paris Saint-Germain: Safonov; Zabarnyi, Marquinhos, Willian Pacho, Nuno Mendes; João Neves, Vitinha, Dro Fernández; Mbaye, Mayulu, Kvaratskhelia.

PSG have no confirmed absentees, but Barcola, Dembélé, Doué, Fabián Ruiz, Hakimi, Lucas Hernández and Zaïre-Emery remain doubtful because of fitness concerns.

Aston Villa: Bizot; Cash, Lindelöf, Pau Torres, Maatsen; João Gomes, Kamara; McGinn, Buendía, Garnacho; Abraham.

Bailey, Manzambi and Onana are unavailable through injury. Konsa, Emiliano Martínez and Watkins are not yet fully fit, while Garnacho and McGinn remain doubtful.

Luis Enrique: We Want to Show How Unpredictable We Can Be

PSG coach Luis Enrique described the club’s participation in the Super Cup as a reward for the work completed during the previous campaign.

“We’re happy to be here because that shows we did a good job last season. It’s difficult to know exactly what our current level is, but we’re excited. We want to demonstrate how unpredictable we can be. We begin this campaign with the same ambition and desire,” the Spanish coach said.

Captain Marquinhos stressed that the team remain hungry for more silverware.

“We have won trophies in recent seasons, but that doesn’t mean anything is easy. We want more and will do everything possible to win this trophy,” the Brazilian said.

Emery: PSG Are the Best Team in the World

Unai Emery described the match as an important test for Aston Villa.

“We’re trying to build a winning team and then compete for trophies. The Super Cup is another opportunity to win one. We’re facing Paris Saint-Germain, currently the best team in the world, and that gives us an opportunity to compare our level with theirs,” the Villa coach said.

Captain John McGinn emphasised that the club’s ambition remains unchanged despite several alterations to the squad.

“We have the same core, the same coach, the same methods and the same desire to achieve more. As long as we maintain that hunger, the supporters can expect the maximum from us,” McGinn said.

Salzburg Sets the Stage

The match will be played at FC Salzburg’s home stadium, a venue that hosted three matches during UEFA EURO 2008.

It will be the first major UEFA club final staged at the ground. Salzburg becomes the 14th city to host the Super Cup since the competition moved away from its long-standing home in Monaco.

Everything is ready for a memorable evening: the Champions League winners against the Europa League champions, Luis Enrique against Unai Emery and two teams committed to attacking football.

European football roars back into action in Salzburg as Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa compete for the first trophy of the 2026/27 season.
