France and England will meet in Miami for the bronze medal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but ahead of this showdown, history speaks more strongly in favor of the “Three Lions.”

In the 32 meetings played so far, England have recorded 17 victories, France have won ten, while five matches have ended in draws.

However, the history of this rivalry can be divided into two distinct eras. England dominated almost completely during the first half of the 20th century, while France have been the more successful side in the modern era.

The biggest victory in the history of the fixture came on May 26, 1927, when England demolished France 6–0 in Paris.

George Brown and the legendary Dixie Dean scored twice each, while an own goal by André Rollet and another strike completed England’s emphatic triumph, according to England’s historical archives.

Just one year later, in 1928, England secured another convincing victory in Paris, this time winning 5–1.

France have also delivered their own historic response. “Les Bleus” have defeated England 5–2 on two occasions: first in a friendly in 1931 and then in a European Championship qualifier in 1963.

When it comes to the World Cup, however, the historical advantage remains with England.

The two national teams have met three times on football’s biggest stage. England won 2–0 in the group stage in 1966, on their way to lifting their only World Cup trophy.

In 1982, England triumphed again, winning 3–1 in a match in which Bryan Robson scored after just 27 seconds.

France gained revenge in the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Goals from Aurélien Tchouaméni and Olivier Giroud gave France a 2–1 victory. Harry Kane converted one penalty but missed a second in the closing stages.

Therefore, ahead of their fourth World Cup meeting, England lead the tournament’s head-to-head record by two victories to one.

The overall statistics, however, do not tell the complete story. France have won four of the last six meetings, demonstrating that the balance of power has shifted significantly in modern football.

In Miami, England will rely on tradition, while France will draw confidence from their recent dominance.

It is not the final either team wanted, but it is a match in which national pride, the bronze medal and more than a century of history will be at stake.

History favors England, but the pitch will determine who owns the present.
