Italy Search for a New Head Coach: Thiago Motta Emerges as Leading Candidate

Following the collapse of negotiations with Andrea Pirlo, which sparked political and media controversy, the Italian Football Federation is attempting to restore unity around its new technical project.

The FIGC hopes to appoint Italy’s new head coach by Tuesday.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Thiago Motta has emerged as the latest and most concrete candidate. Intensive talks are currently taking place between technical director Paolo Maldini and FIGC president Giovanni Malagò.

Malagò Seeks Agreement with Maldini and Leonardo

Malagò made it clear to Maldini and adviser Leonardo that the negotiations with Pirlo could not continue.

Following that decision, Maldini and Leonardo reportedly indicated that they were prepared to resign. However, the FIGC president opposed their departure and urged both men to work toward a compromise.

The aim is for the three officials to continue working together on the rebuilding of the Italian national team.

Maldini and Leonardo Rule Out Conte and Mancini

Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini are not considered suitable candidates by Maldini and Leonardo.

The two directors reportedly believe that both coaches are too far removed from the philosophy they want to establish. Italy’s new head coach must be fully aligned with the technical project and committed to a modern, proactive and attacking style of football.

Thiago Motta Becomes the Leading Candidate

In this context, Thiago Motta has emerged as the leading option. He remains under contract with Juventus, but the Turin club would reportedly be willing to release him, reducing its financial commitments in the process.

When asked about the possibility of appointing Motta, Malagò refused to rule it out:

“I can neither say yes nor no.”

Talks between Malagò and Maldini are continuing, with the Federation hoping to reach an agreement that could be officially announced by Tuesday.

If all parties find common ground, Thiago Motta will take charge of Italy, while Paolo Maldini and Leonardo will remain in their positions and continue leading the Azzurri’s new technical project.
