LISBON, Portugal – The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has officially appointed Jorge Jesus as the new head coach of the Portugal national team. The 71-year-old manager has signed a four-year contract that will keep him in charge through the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Portugal will co-host alongside Spain and Morocco.

Jesus replaces Roberto Martínez, who stepped down following Portugal's elimination in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Spain.

A Manager with Vast Experience

Jorge Jesus is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished Portuguese managers of his generation. Throughout his career, he has managed several top clubs, including Benfica, Sporting CP, Flamengo, Fenerbahçe, Al Hilal, and most recently Al Nassr, where he guided the Saudi club to the Saudi Pro League title.

The Portuguese Football Federation believes Jesus' experience, leadership, and winning mentality will be instrumental in building a competitive national team ahead of the 2030 World Cup on home soil.

His first official match as Portugal manager will be a UEFA Nations League fixture against Wales on September 24.

What Happens Next with Cristiano Ronaldo?

The appointment of Jorge Jesus has immediately reignited speculation about Cristiano Ronaldo's international future.

Following Portugal's exit from the 2026 World Cup, the 41-year-old superstar confirmed that it had been his final World Cup, but he stopped short of announcing his retirement from international football altogether.

During his unveiling, Jorge Jesus made his position crystal clear:

"Cristiano Ronaldo is a symbol of Portuguese football. If he is available and wants to continue, the national team's door will always be open to him."

The new Portugal coach also revealed that he has not yet spoken personally with Ronaldo but plans to meet with him soon to discuss his future with the national team.

A Relationship Built on Success

Jesus and Ronaldo enjoyed a successful partnership at Al Nassr, where they won the Saudi Pro League title together. Their strong working relationship could prove to be a key factor in Ronaldo's decision on whether to continue representing Portugal.

While Ronaldo has indicated that he intends to finish his club career with Al Nassr, it remains to be seen whether he will continue wearing the Portugal shirt in future competitions, including UEFA Euro 2028.

With Jorge Jesus now at the helm, Portugal begins a new era with one clear objective: building a championship-winning team capable of competing for glory at the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
