Klinsmann: A USA Victory Over Belgium Would Be a Historic Milestone
FIFA
The upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash between the United States and Belgium brings back memories of their unforgettable meeting at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
On that occasion, the United States suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 extra-time defeat, but goalkeeper Tim Howard produced one of the greatest performances in World Cup history, making an astonishing 16 saves—a tournament record that still stands today.
Former United States head coach Jurgen Klinsmann told FIFA that Belgium should be considered the slight favorite because of its experience and quality, but emphasized that the American team has grown significantly.
"Belgium is the favorite, but the United States has matured and gained tremendous confidence. Playing at home and enjoying a strong run, this team has every reason to believe."
Belgium enters the match with an experienced core that includes Thibaut Courtois, Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku, and Axel Witsel, all of whom were part of the Belgian squad that defeated the USA in 2014.
Klinsmann praised Belgium's ability to perform in the biggest moments.
"They know exactly when to raise their level. They have players capable of deciding a match in a split second. They won't be intimidated by 70,000 or 80,000 fans cheering against them."
However, Klinsmann believes the United States has a genuine opportunity to make history. The return of Folarin Balogun, after his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina was overturned, gives Mauricio Pochettino's side an important boost in attack.
For Klinsmann, a victory over Belgium would represent much more than simply reaching the quarter-finals.
"It would be another historic milestone for soccer in the United States. Since 1990, the game has grown tremendously. Advancing to another round of the World Cup would provide another massive boost to the sport across the country."
The United States is aiming to reach the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2002, while Belgium hopes its experience and world-class talent will once again prove decisive on football's biggest stage.
