Emotional Farewell for Cristiano Ronaldo

DALLAS, USA – Spain booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in dramatic fashion after Mikel Merino struck deep into stoppage time to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Portugal at Dallas Stadium.

The tense Iberian derby appeared destined for extra time until Merino produced the decisive moment in the 90+1st minute, firing home from close range after excellent work from substitute Ferran Torres. The late winner kept Spain's World Cup dream alive and ended Portugal's campaign in heartbreaking fashion.

Merino Delivers When It Mattered Most

Both teams produced an intense tactical battle filled with high-quality football but very few clear-cut chances.

Spain looked the more dangerous side during the opening 45 minutes. Mikel Oyarzabal wasted the best opportunity after being played through brilliantly by Dani Olmo, dragging his shot narrowly wide of the post. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa then came to Portugal's rescue with an outstanding fingertip save to deny Alex Baena's curling effort.

Portugal responded through their captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who remained a constant threat. Their closest opportunity came when Nuno Mendes unleashed a powerful strike that took a slight deflection before crashing against the crossbar.

The second half became increasingly cautious, with neither side willing to commit too many players forward as the knockout tension grew.

Just when extra time looked inevitable, Spain found the breakthrough. Ferran Torres delivered a perfectly weighted pass into the box, allowing Merino to drive a low, powerful finish beyond Costa and send the Spanish supporters into celebration.

Emotional Farewell for Cristiano Ronaldo

The defeat also marked what is expected to be the final FIFA World Cup appearance of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Before kickoff, the legendary Portuguese captain confirmed that the tournament would be his last on football's biggest stage.

The 41-year-old leaves behind one of the greatest World Cup legacies in history. During the tournament he scored 11 international goals in his last 27 appearances and became the first player ever to score in six different FIFA World Cup editions, adding yet another remarkable achievement to his extraordinary career.

Although Portugal's journey ended in disappointment, Ronaldo departed having once again demonstrated his enduring quality and leadership.

Spain Continue Historic Defensive Run

Spain's victory highlighted not only their attacking resilience but also their remarkable defensive consistency.

Luis de la Fuente's side became the first nation in FIFA World Cup history to record six consecutive clean sheets, underlining why they are among the favorites to lift the trophy.

Merino also continued his impressive scoring form, netting his ninth goal in his last 17 international appearances after waiting more than three years to score his first goal for Spain.

Rodri Named Player of the Match

Spain midfielder Rodri controlled the tempo throughout the contest with another commanding performance in midfield and was deservedly awarded the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match.
