Mancini Calls for a Response Against Turkey: “Results Will Change the Atmosphere”
After the defeat to Belgium, Italy face Vincenzo Montella’s Turkey in Bursa on Monday. Mancini wants better pressing and aggression, while Tonali urges critics to give the younger players time.
Roberto Mancini struck a serious tone when he spoke to reporters in Bursa. The defeat to Belgium and the boos from fans at the Stadio Olimpico have added to the pressure on Italy. Mancini believes his team must answer on the pitch against Turkey. The coach said he understands the fans’ disappointment. Italy, he argued, must stay calm and keep working: if the team plays well and wins, the atmosphere around the national side will change. He acknowledged that Belgium caused Italy problems, although he praised his players’ reaction in the second half. Mancini does not expect a major change in tactics. His longer-term aim is to build a competitive team, but against Turkey he wants an immediate improvement in pressing and aggression. He left ten players behind at Coverciano, saying the decision had been made in advance. Changes to the starting lineup are likely because of the demanding match schedule. He will decide on Kean’s availability on the morning of the game. Mancini also spoke respectfully about Turkey. He praised Vincenzo Montella’s work and the talent in his squad, describing the match in Bursa as a difficult test for Italy. The coach defended Romano against criticism following the Belgium game. Mistakes happen even to experienced players, he said, and outside judgments will not determine whether Romano plays again. Bastoni, returning after his suspension, is physically fit, according to Mancini. Sandro Tonali also spoke at the news conference. The midfielder asked critics to give Italy’s younger players time and said the more experienced members of the squad should shoulder more responsibility. Tonali said he has fully recovered from his physical discomfort and is ready to play wherever he is needed in midfield.
