Mbappé Claims the adidas Golden Boot

Kylian Mbappé has won the adidas Golden Boot at the FIFA World Cup 2026, retaining the award he claimed as the tournament’s leading goalscorer at Qatar 2022.

The France captain scored an extraordinary 10 goals during the tournament in North America, becoming the World Cup’s top scorer for the second consecutive edition.

Mbappé reached double figures by scoring twice in France’s thrilling 6-4 defeat against England in Saturday’s bronze-medal match in Miami.

The 27-year-old, who also received the adidas Bronze Ball for his overall performances, helped France reach the semifinals before Didier Deschamps’ team suffered a 2-0 defeat against eventual champions Spain.

Mbappé’s spectacular tournament

Mbappé began his World Cup journey by scoring four goals as France lifted the trophy in Russia in 2018. He added eight more at Qatar 2022, where Les Bleus reached the final.

His 10 goals in 2026 have now taken his career total to 22, making him the leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history.

During this year’s tournament, Mbappé scored twice against Senegal and Iraq in the group stage before registering another brace in the Round of 32 victory over Sweden.

He then converted the decisive penalty against Paraguay and scored the opening goal in France’s 2-0 quarterfinal victory over Morocco.

Although Spain prevented him from scoring in the semifinal, Mbappé ended his tournament with another two goals against England in the bronze-medal match.

His double-figure total allowed him to finish ahead of Argentina captain Lionel Messi. The two legends exchanged places at the top of the standings several times during the competition, but Messi completed his campaign with eight goals.

England midfielder Jude Bellingham finished third with seven goals and one assist, ahead of Norway striker Erling Haaland, who also scored seven times but registered no assists.

Despite winning another Golden Boot, the Real Madrid forward admitted that he would have exchanged the individual award for an opportunity to compete in the World Cup final.

“When you score that many goals at the World Cup, it takes you to another level. But I would have preferred not to be the top scorer and to have played in the final.”

Mbappé added that the achievement would become more meaningful later in his life.

“It is good for my legacy once I have retired, but right now, that is not what is on my mind.”

Deschamps praises his captain

Outgoing France coach Didier Deschamps, who guided Mbappé through all three of his World Cup appearances, described him as an extraordinary player and an exemplary leader.

“He is an extraordinary player and a brilliant captain. He started at the age of 18 and has been one of the key players in this team.”

Deschamps also said he had no regrets about appointing Mbappé as France captain.

“Based on what I have seen him do both on and off the pitch, I have absolutely no regrets about choosing him as captain. He has been exemplary throughout this World Cup.”

Mbappé may have fallen short of lifting another World Cup, but his place in the competition’s history is secure.
