French superstar Kylian Mbappé has returned to the top of the race for the adidas Golden Boot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the award presented to the tournament's leading goalscorer.

The France forward scored his eighth goal of the competition in the quarter-final victory over Morocco, reclaiming first place in the standings. Although Lionel Messi has also scored eight goals, Mbappé leads the rankings thanks to his superior number of assists.

With the semi-finals approaching, however, the race remains wide open as several of football's biggest stars are still in contention for one of the World Cup's most prestigious individual awards.

Mbappé and Messi Lead the Way

Mbappé has scored 8 goals and provided 3 assists, putting him at the top of the Golden Boot standings.

Close behind is Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who has also netted 8 goals but has recorded 2 assists, placing him second.

Norway's Erling Haaland finished the tournament with 7 goals, but following Norway's quarter-final elimination by England, he no longer has the opportunity to add to his tally.

England stars Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane remain firmly in contention with 6 goals and 1 assist each, and both will have the chance to close the gap during the semi-finals.

How Is the adidas Golden Boot Decided?

According to FIFA regulations, the adidas Golden Boot is awarded to the player who scores the most goals during the FIFA World Cup.

If two or more players finish level on goals, the tiebreakers are applied in the following order:

With France, Argentina, and England still alive in the tournament, the battle for the adidas Golden Boot promises to be one of the most exciting storylines heading into the final stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mbappé currently holds the advantage, but Messi, Kane, and Bellingham all remain within striking distance. The semi-finals and final could ultimately determine not only the next world champion, but also the player who finishes as the tournament's top scorer.
