Kylian Mbappé scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot as France secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay, booking their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.

The French superstar converted calmly in the 69th minute, giving Les Bleus the breakthrough after Paraguay had frustrated the two-time world champions with a disciplined defensive performance for more than an hour.

France dominated possession throughout the match but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against a well-organized Paraguayan side. Goalkeeper Orlando Gill produced several outstanding saves and was deservedly named Superior Player of the Match, despite ending up on the losing side.

The decisive moment came after a VAR review awarded France a penalty when Désiré Doué was fouled inside the box. Mbappé stepped up with confidence and sent Gill the wrong way to score his seventh goal of the tournament.

With the victory, France advances to the last eight, where they will face Morocco on 9 July at Boston Stadium.

Mbappé's Incredible World Cup Form

Mbappé has now scored 7 goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, moving level with Lionel Messi at the top of the Golden Boot standings. Thanks to his superior number of assists, however, the French captain currently leads the race for the 2026 adidas Golden Boot.

The goal also saw Mbappé extend his remarkable World Cup legacy by becoming the first player in history to score in the Round of 16 at three consecutive FIFA World Cups. In addition, he now has a record 11 goals in World Cup knockout matches, the most ever by any player.

Coaches' Reactions

France coach Didier Deschamps praised his team's patience and determination after overcoming Paraguay's defensive resistance.

"We stayed focused throughout the match. Paraguay defended with many players behind the ball, making it extremely difficult to find space. The heat also made the game even more demanding."

Deschamps also revealed that he instructed his tallest players to protect Mbappé in the closing stages as Paraguay became increasingly physical.

Paraguay manager Gustavo Alfaro expressed pride in his team's performance despite the defeat.

"Our objective was to disrupt France's rhythm and remain organized defensively. We managed to keep one of the tournament favorites under pressure until the decisive penalty."
