Brobbey and Gakpo hit doubles as Oranje produce five-star display in Houston

By Elite Sport Vizion. By Albano Kolonjari ·

The Netherlands delivered one of the most impressive performances of the FIFA World Cup 2026 so far, cruising to a dominant 5-1 victory over Sweden in Houston and moving to the top of Group F.

A sensational attacking display from Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo proved too much for the Swedes, with both forwards scoring twice as the Oranje overwhelmed their European rivals in a thrilling encounter.

The Dutch wasted little time asserting their authority. Just five minutes into the match, Cody Gakpo whipped in a dangerous cross from the left and Brian Brobbey powered home to give Ronald Koeman's side the perfect start.

Twelve minutes later, the Dutch doubled their advantage. Denzel Dumfries surged down the right flank and delivered a low cross that Brobbey expertly converted for his second goal of the afternoon, sending the orange-clad supporters into celebration.

Sweden attempted to fight back and believed they had reduced the deficit through Gustaf Lagerbielke, only for the offside flag to deny them after a lengthy celebration.

Any hopes of a Swedish comeback disappeared shortly after halftime.

Gakpo, already influential with an assist, took center stage. The Liverpool star struck twice within seven minutes of the restart. First, he finished from close range following excellent team play before producing a trademark finish, cutting inside from the left and blasting an unstoppable effort into the corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Substitute Anthony Elanga briefly offered Sweden hope when he broke clear and finished brilliantly to make it 4-1 in the 59th minute, but the Oranje quickly restored their four-goal cushion.

Crysencio Summerville capped a memorable afternoon in the 89th minute, smashing a powerful right-footed effort into the net to complete the rout and seal a comprehensive 5-1 victory.

The result lifts the Netherlands to the summit of Group F, one point ahead of Sweden, while Graham Potter's side will now look to regroup before their final group-stage challenge.

Graham Potter (Sweden Coach): "We were playing against a very good team. They punished us in wide areas and we didn't deal well enough with the first goal. We must learn from this experience."

Brian Brobbey (Netherlands Striker): "It feels amazing to make a direct impact. Everybody in this team fights for each other and that's what makes us strong."

Victor Lindelöf (Sweden Captain): "Some of the goals we conceded were too easy. Against players of this quality, if you lose half a meter, they punish you immediately."
