Nyland: It's Hard to Describe These Emotions

Norway Make History by Eliminating Brazil and Booking Their Place in the World Cup Quarter-finals

By FIFA @ ELITE SPORT VIZION ·

Norway produced one of the greatest upsets in FIFA World Cup history by defeating Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16, securing a place in the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.

At New York New Jersey Stadium, Ståle Solbakken's side wrote a new chapter in Norwegian football. The heroes of the night were goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, who delivered a magnificent performance, and striker Erling Haaland, whose two goals eliminated the five-time world champions.

After the match, Nyland struggled to put his emotions into words.

"It's very hard to describe these emotions. It's an incredible feeling, probably the best feeling I've ever experienced."

The Norwegian goalkeeper said the team had always believed they could eliminate Brazil, despite being considered heavy underdogs.

"We knew we were the underdogs and that it would be extremely difficult, but we believed we could beat Brazil. And now we've done it. It's unbelievable. We all know what Brazil represents in the World Cup."

The 35-year-old was instrumental in Norway's victory, making four outstanding saves, including stopping a Bruno Guimarães penalty in the first half.

Nyland revealed that the performance was the result of meticulous preparation.

"Everything comes down to preparation. I studied our opponents, worked closely with my mental coach, our analysts and the goalkeeping coaches. This victory belongs to them as much as it belongs to us."

However, according to Nyland, the best moment of the night wasn't the penalty save.

"The best feeling came when the referee blew the final whistle."

Haaland Continues to Rewrite the Record Books

Once again, Erling Haaland was Norway's match-winner, scoring both goals to continue his sensational World Cup campaign.

With his brace against Brazil, the Norwegian striker reached seven goals in the tournament, becoming the first player since West Germany's Gerd Müller in 1970 to score seven goals in his first four FIFA World Cup appearances.

Haaland reacted to the achievement with his trademark composure.

"That's usually how it goes. If I get one or two chances, they usually end up in the back of the net. I don't know exactly how I do it, but that's how it happens."

The Manchester City star said his greatest strength is staying mentally focused.

"It's all about staying focused. I always tell myself that the chance will come. Now I'm beginning to realize it's a gift from God that the ball keeps finding the perfect place."

A Message to Norway's Next Generation

Haaland also delivered an emotional message to young footballers across Norway.

"I hope every young person watching this grows up dreaming of playing for Norway. There is no greater honor than representing your country."

He admitted he wished he could celebrate among the fans back home.

"I wish I could be out in the streets celebrating with everyone. This is one of the craziest days in Norwegian history. Now we simply have to enjoy every second of this moment."

A Victory That Will Be Remembered Forever

Norway's stunning victory over Brazil will go down as one of the greatest surprises of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With a heroic goalkeeper, a world-class goalscorer, and a team that never stopped believing, Norway has captured the imagination of football fans around the world and now continues its remarkable journey into the quarter-finals.
