OFFICIAL: Mauricio Pochettino Extends USMNT Contract Through 2030 World Cup

The U.S. Soccer Federation has officially announced a new contract extension for Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine coach will remain in charge of the United States Men’s National Team through the conclusion of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The new four-year agreement gives Pochettino the opportunity to oversee his first complete World Cup cycle with the USMNT. His previous contract expired following the 2026 World Cup, where the United States was eliminated in the Round of 16 after a 4-1 defeat to Belgium.

Despite the elimination, U.S. Soccer officials were pleased with the team’s overall performance during the tournament. The United States finished top of its group with six points, ahead of Australia, Paraguay and Turkey, while scoring in every match it played.

Expanded Role for Pochettino

Pochettino’s responsibilities will extend beyond coaching the senior national team. He and his staff will also advise the federation on youth development pathways, coaching education and collaboration with professional leagues in the United States.

Jesús Pérez, Miguel D’Agostino, Toni Jiménez, Sebastián Pochettino and Silvia Tuyà will all remain members of his coaching staff.

The financial details of the new agreement were not disclosed. According to reports, billionaire Ken Griffin and other private investors will once again help finance the contract. Pochettino is expected to remain the highest-paid coach in the history of American soccer.

Pochettino: We Have Extraordinary Potential

Speaking about his decision to continue, the Argentine coach described the connection created with the supporters and the entire organization during the World Cup as one of the key factors.

“The magical thing that happened during the World Cup, the connection with the people and the entire organization, was the key point. We have extraordinary potential to make this program even stronger,” Pochettino said.

U.S. Soccer CEO JT Batson emphasized that the extension reflects the mutual belief between the federation and the coach, as well as their shared ambition to continue the national team’s long-term development.

The Major Objective: The 2030 World Cup

Pochettino will lead the United States through the upcoming Concacaf Nations League, Gold Cup and 2030 World Cup qualifying cycle.

Unlike in 2026, when the United States qualified automatically as a co-host, the Americans must secure their place in the 2030 tournament through Concacaf qualifying.

Mexico, Canada, Panama, Jamaica and Costa Rica are expected to be among their strongest regional rivals. However, the final format of the Concacaf qualification process has yet to be officially confirmed.

Another important part of Pochettino’s project will be the gradual transition between generations. Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Antonee Robinson will remain important leaders, but the coach is expected to introduce more young players into the squad.

The 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games and the regional competitions will provide opportunities to test the emerging talents expected to form the backbone of the USMNT at the 2030 World Cup.
