Pessina’s Injury Changes Monza’s Transfer Plans as Kristjan Asllani Returns to the Spotlight
AC Monza have reopened negotiations to sign Albanian midfielder Kristjan Asllani from Inter Milan. The Biancorossi consider the 24-year-old an ideal reinforcement following the serious injury suffered by captain Matteo Pessina.
Pessina dislocated his right kneecap during a training session. Medical examinations ruled out significant damage to his cruciate ligaments and meniscus, but the midfielder will still require surgery.
Monza’s captain is expected to remain sidelined for at least two months. His absence has forced head coach Ivan Jurić and the club’s management to urgently revise their transfer strategy.
Monza need a midfielder who understands Serie A and can immediately take responsibility for organizing the team’s play. Asllani meets those requirements, prompting the club to intensify talks with Inter.
According to reports from Italy, the Nerazzurri have offered the player to Monza in an attempt to accelerate negotiations and reach an agreement.
The Albanian international’s market value is estimated at around €12 million. Inter initially demanded between €12 million and €15 million but may now consider offers starting at approximately €10 million.
Completing a permanent transfer at this stage of the window would be financially challenging for Monza. Therefore, the most likely formula is a loan deal with an option or obligation to buy.
The purchase obligation could be linked to specific sporting conditions, particularly Monza securing their Serie A status for next season.
Inter, meanwhile, want to move on several players who are no longer considered central to their sporting project. Asllani’s departure would free up space in the squad and reduce the wage bill, allowing the Nerazzurri to pursue additional signings.
The Albanian midfielder has been unable to secure consistent playing time at Inter. Strong competition in midfield has significantly limited his opportunities as a starter.
For Asllani, a move to Monza could provide the opportunity to play regularly and assume a leading role. His priority is to remain in Serie A, the league where he developed and whose style and demands he understands well.
Under Jurić, Asllani could operate as a deep-lying playmaker in front of the defence, taking responsibility for initiating attacks and controlling the team’s tempo.
Pessina’s injury has made the Asllani operation a priority for Monza. Negotiations have been reopened, and the coming days should determine whether the clubs can agree on the transfer formula and financial terms.
Such a move would give Asllani the playing time he has lacked in Milan, while Monza would secure a young and technically gifted midfielder with valuable Serie A experience.
