Pochettino Close to Extending His USMNT Contract Through the 2030 World Cup
Mauricio Pochettino is close to signing a contract extension with the U.S. Soccer Federation. The Argentine coach is expected to remain in charge of the United States Men’s National Team through the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The two sides are reportedly finalizing a new four-year agreement. An official announcement and the formal signing of the contract are expected within the coming days.
U.S. Soccer Federation President Cindy Parlow Cone said negotiations were progressing very well and that an official announcement was imminent.
U.S. Soccer maintains its confidence despite elimination
Pochettino led the United States to the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Americans’ campaign ended with a 4–1 defeat against Belgium, but federation officials have decided to place their trust in the coach for another cycle.
Despite the heavy knockout-stage loss, the USMNT’s overall performance during the tournament was viewed positively.
The United States finished first in Group D after recording victories over Paraguay and Australia. In the Round of 32, the Americans defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2–0, registering their first World Cup knockout victory since 2002.
Goalscoring record at the 2026 World Cup
Under Pochettino’s leadership, the United States set a new national-team record by scoring 11 goals in five World Cup matches.
The Argentine coach recorded three victories during the tournament, becoming the most successful USMNT head coach in World Cup history by total wins.
Although the team did not advance beyond the Round of 16, U.S. Soccer officials recognized progress in its style of play, mentality and ability to compete at the highest level.
From Tottenham, PSG and Chelsea to the USMNT
Pochettino was appointed United States head coach in September 2024, replacing Gregg Berhalter. His original agreement focused primarily on preparing the team for the 2026 World Cup.
The Argentine arrived with significant experience in European football after previously managing major clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.
Across his first 31 matches in charge of the USMNT, Pochettino recorded 17 victories, two draws and 12 defeats. His annual salary is reportedly around $6 million, placing him among the highest-paid coaches in international football.
A long-term project through 2030
Under the proposed extension, Pochettino would lead the United States through several major tournaments.
The schedule includes the 2027 Gold Cup, the 2028 Copa América hosted in the United States and the 2030 FIFA World Cup cycle.
The federation wants to complete the agreement as quickly as possible, allowing Pochettino to focus on preparing the team for its international friendlies in September and October.
Extending Pochettino’s contract would demonstrate U.S. Soccer’s commitment to continuity. The main objective is to build on the foundations established during the 2026 World Cup and develop a more mature and competitive team for 2030.
