Qatar Snatch Dramatic Late Point Against Switzerland in World Cup Opener

By FIFA @ ELITE SPORT VIZION ·

Qatar earned a historic and dramatic point in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 Group B match after a stoppage-time own goal denied Switzerland victory in a thrilling 1-1 draw at San Francisco Bay Arena Stadium.

The Swiss appeared to be on course for all three points after striker Breel Embolo converted a penalty in the 17th minute following a foul by Mahmoud Abunada on Remo Freuler. Murat Yakin's side dominated large portions of the contest, creating numerous chances and finishing with an impressive 26 shots on goal.

Dan Ndoye was a constant threat throughout the first half and could easily have found the net on multiple occasions, while Michel Aebischer saw an effort cleared off the line just before halftime. Switzerland controlled possession and looked comfortable as Qatar struggled to create sustained pressure.

Despite the Swiss dominance, Qatar never stopped believing. Their best first-half opportunity came when Edmilson Junior broke clear after a defensive mistake by Manuel Akanji, but goalkeeper Gregor Kobel reacted well to deny the winger.

As the match entered stoppage time, Qatar launched one final attack. A dangerous cross from Homam Ahmed was met by Swiss substitute Miro Muheim, who, under pressure from Boualem Khoukhi, inadvertently headed the ball into his own net in the 94th minute.

The dramatic equalizer sparked wild celebrations among the Qatari players and supporters, securing the nation's first point of the FIFA World Cup 2026 and keeping their hopes alive in Group B.

Switzerland extended their unbeaten run in World Cup opening matches to seven games, but the result felt like a defeat after their inability to convert numerous chances.

After the match, Swiss coach Murat Yakin expressed his frustration:

"We created good chances and got into excellent positions, but we lacked precision and belief in front of goal. We simply weren't clinical enough."

Qatar defender Mahmoud Abunada was named Superior Player of the Match, despite conceding the first-half penalty, thanks to his resilient defensive display and leadership during Qatar's late comeback.
