Ramos the Hero as Portugal Edge World Cup Epic
FIFA
Portugal booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after producing a dramatic late comeback to defeat Croatia 2-1 in an unforgettable Round of 32 clash at Toronto Stadium on Thursday night.
A stoppage-time header from Gonçalo Ramos completed a remarkable turnaround for Roberto Martínez's side after Croatia had looked on course for a famous victory following Ivan Perišić's second-half opener. Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, once again proved decisive, calmly converting a penalty to level the match before Ramos delivered the decisive blow in the 94th minute.
Portugal Dominates Early
Portugal controlled possession and created the better chances throughout the opening half but were repeatedly denied by Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livaković and a disciplined Croatian defense.
Just four minutes into the match, Rafael Leão burst past the Croatian backline before cutting the ball back to Bruno Fernandes, whose first effort was brilliantly saved before Josip Šutalo blocked the rebound.
Pedro Neto was equally dangerous down the right flank, repeatedly delivering dangerous crosses. Ronaldo came inches away from opening the scoring, while Leão fired over the crossbar after another Neto delivery created confusion inside Croatia's penalty area.
Despite Portugal's dominance, the teams entered halftime scoreless.
Perišić Strikes First
Croatia emerged with renewed confidence after the interval.
Only eight minutes into the second half, Nikola Vlašić combined brilliantly with Josip Stanišić, whose perfectly weighted cross found Ivan Perišić arriving at the far post. The veteran winger made no mistake, firing Croatia into a 1-0 lead.
Moments later, Croatia believed they had doubled their advantage when Igor Matanović found the net, but the assistant referee's offside flag denied Zlatko Dalić's side.
Ronaldo Answers Again
That warning sparked Portugal back into life.
Leão rattled the crossbar before Ronaldo thought he had equalized with a delicate finish, only for another offside decision to cancel the goal.
Portugal's persistence was finally rewarded midway through the second half.
Following a VAR review, Nikola Vlašić was penalized for pulling Renato Veiga during a corner kick. Ronaldo stepped up confidently and buried the penalty into the bottom corner to score his third goal of FIFA World Cup 2026 and the first knockout-stage World Cup goal of his legendary career.
At 41 years old, Ronaldo also became the oldest player ever to score in a FIFA World Cup knockout match, surpassing fellow Portuguese legend Pepe.
Croatia Pushes, Portugal Survives
Croatia refused to surrender.
Mateo Kovačić twice forced excellent saves from Diogo Costa, while Matanović was denied by another outstanding stop from the Portuguese goalkeeper.
Petar Sučić also found the net late in the match, but Croatia's celebrations were cut short once more by the offside flag.
Ramos Delivers the Knockout Blow
With extra time looming, Portugal produced one final attack.
Deep into stoppage time, Rafael Leão delivered a magnificent cross into the penalty area where substitute Gonçalo Ramos rose above everyone to power a header into the net, sending the Portuguese bench into wild celebrations.
Croatia thought they had rescued the match moments later when Joško Gvardiol tapped home after Mario Pašalić squared the ball across goal.
However, after another lengthy VAR review, Pašalić was ruled offside, crushing Croatia's hopes and confirming Portugal's dramatic qualification.
Ronaldo Named Player of the Match
Cristiano Ronaldo was deservedly named the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match.
After the game, the Portugal captain admitted his side dominated the opening half before losing control early in the second period.
"We panicked a little after conceding, but we showed character. I believe we deserved the victory. Luka Modrić is a legend and it's always an honor to play against him," Ronaldo said.
Bernardo Silva praised Portugal's response after falling behind.
"We lost control for a period, but the reaction from the team was outstanding. Luka Modrić continues to inspire everyone in football."
Martínez Praises Mental Strength
Portugal coach Roberto Martínez applauded his team's resilience following another dramatic knockout victory.
"The mentality of this group was exceptional. Falling behind in a World Cup knockout game is never easy, but we stayed calm, believed in ourselves and our substitutions completely changed the momentum. Gonçalo Ramos rewarded the team's belief with a fantastic winning goal."
Martínez also paid tribute to both Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modrić.
"They are living legends. Even at this stage of their careers, they continue to influence matches at the very highest level."
Dalić Left Heartbroken
Croatia coach Zlatko Dalić struggled to hide his disappointment after another cruel World Cup exit.
"We gave everything. Losing like this hurts enormously."
Dalić also questioned the late VAR offside decision that disallowed Croatia's stoppage-time equalizer.
"We were seconds away from taking the game into extra time. Football can sometimes be incredibly cruel."
Next Challenge: Spain
Portugal now advances to one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament, where they will face Spain in the Round of 16 on 6 July in Dallas.
With Ronaldo chasing another piece of history and Portugal showing remarkable resilience, a blockbuster Iberian derby now awaits.
