Real Madrid have officially entered the race to sign Portuguese star Bernardo Silva, submitting a contract proposal to the midfielder as he prepares to leave Manchester City on a free transfer this summer.

Silva, whose contract expires on June 30, is expected to bring an end to his remarkable nine-year spell at Manchester City, where he established himself as one of Europe's most versatile and technically gifted midfielders.

A key factor behind Madrid's pursuit is the return of José Mourinho to the Santiago Bernabéu. The Portuguese manager reportedly identified Silva as his top transfer target and strongly pushed the club's hierarchy to complete the deal. Although Real Madrid's board initially hesitated over signing the 31-year-old, club president Florentino Pérez eventually approved the move following Mourinho's insistence.

The transfer race has taken an unexpected twist, as Silva had been in advanced negotiations with both Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. Barcelona were believed to have prepared a long-term contract offer, but the player has reportedly paused all discussions after receiving direct contact from Mourinho.

While no final agreement has been reached, Silva is expected to make a decision on his future immediately after the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Real Madrid remain confident that Mourinho's influence could prove decisive in securing one of the most sought-after free agents on the market.
