An inspired defensive performance from Ghana earned the Black Stars a valuable 0-0 draw against England in Group L of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ at Boston Stadium on Tuesday.

The result leaves both teams on four points heading into the final round of group-stage fixtures on 27 June, with qualification for the Round of 32 now firmly within reach. A point against Panama for England and Croatia for Ghana would be enough to secure progression for both nations.

Ghana Stand Tall Against English Pressure

England dominated possession for long periods but struggled to find a way through a disciplined and determined Ghanaian defense. The Three Lions created few clear-cut opportunities in a match where patience was repeatedly tested.

The first half offered little excitement, with Ghana sitting deep and denying England space in dangerous areas. Declan Rice came closest before the break with a looping header that sailed over the crossbar.

After the interval, England increased the pressure. Elliot Anderson saw a close-range header blocked before Anthony Gordon tested goalkeeper Benjamin Asare with a powerful effort. Harry Kane also tried his luck with a low drive, but Asare remained alert and composed.

Ghana Threaten on the Counter

While much of the game was played in Ghana's half, the African side looked dangerous whenever they broke forward.

Their best opportunity arrived with less than ten minutes remaining. Abdul Fatawu raced clear and looked destined to score, but Ezri Konsa recovered brilliantly to block the initial attempt. The rebound fell kindly, only for Antoine Semenyo to inadvertently block his teammate's second effort almost on the goal line.

It was a dramatic escape for England and a reminder of Ghana's threat on the counterattack.

England Miss Late Golden Chances

England saved their best opportunities for the closing stages.

In the 87th minute, a flowing attacking move ended with Reece James delivering a perfect cross to Nico O'Reilly at the back post. The youngster's header crashed against the crossbar before falling to Harry Kane, who blasted the rebound high over the goal.

It proved to be the final major opportunity of the contest as Ghana held firm to secure a deserved point.

Managers React

England manager Thomas Tuchel praised Ghana's organization and physicality after the match.

"They defended with 10 players in a deep, deep block. They were very disciplined and made life difficult for us."

Assistant coach Anthony Barry echoed those sentiments, admitting Ghana defended even deeper than England had anticipated.

Captain Harry Kane acknowledged England's missed opportunities but credited Ghana for their compact shape.

"They're a good team, compact and difficult to break down. I should have done better with the late chance."

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz was delighted with his team's commitment and discipline.

"I am so proud of the way our players fought and stayed behind the game plan. We knew we would suffer, but they never stopped believing."
