Cristiano Ronaldo has explained his frustration with Jorge Jesus, linking it to an agreement that, according to the forward, the coach failed to honor. In the statement presented, he also apologizes for leaving without acknowledging the supporters after the match.

According to his account, after the 2026 World Cup, he had prepared a letter to the Portuguese people that he intended to publish when he permanently left the national team. However, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation asked him to reconsider his decision and continue playing.

Ronaldo says he was also consulted about the appointment of Jorge Jesus and supported the choice.

“I felt sincerely happy about that decision. It was the right choice, as the results are showing,” he says in the text.

According to Ronaldo, the coach then presented a plan for his playing time and physical workload during the camp. The forward would play the first and last matches, while Jesus proposed that he remain in Portugal during the away trips to Norway and Denmark.

Ronaldo says he immediately rejected the proposal because he considered it an inappropriate privilege for the captain.

“It would not have been fair. The privilege of staying in Portugal would not have set a good example,” he explains.

He says the coach accepted his reasoning. Ronaldo adds that Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho was present during the conversation and that the terms of the agreement were confirmed in another meeting before the camp.

According to this version of events, the dispute arose on the day of the match against Norway. Ronaldo says he had been preparing not to play, following his physical recovery program, when the coach asked whether he was ready to play for 30 minutes.

He agreed and, according to the statement, was instructed to get ready. But he was never brought on.

“I warmed up from halftime, watched the minutes pass and was not called on. The coach had not kept his word,” Ronaldo says.

The forward admits that after the match he wanted to be alone and did not acknowledge the supporters. He takes personal responsibility for that behavior and apologizes.

“It was a mistake for which I alone am responsible and which should never have happened. I apologize to the Portuguese people who supported us with such passion, to the fans, and to those who may have come to see me and whom I may have disappointed.”

The headline accompanying the material also attributes to Ronaldo a willingness to return after serving a suspension. However, the excerpt of the statement presented here ends with his apology to the supporters and does not provide details about that measure.

“As promised, I have decided to explain, in my own words and directly, the circumstances surrounding my most recent training camp with the Portugal national team.

After the 2026 World Cup, I prepared a letter to the Portuguese people, which I still have. In it, I wrote the words I want to share with them on the day I leave the national team for good.

Immediately after the tournament, during the flight home from the United States, the president of the Federation asked me to reconsider my decision to leave, as the Federation wanted me to continue. He then asked for my opinion of the current national team coach, whom he was considering as a candidate. I told him that, in my opinion, he was the right choice.

A few days later, I met with the new coach, who made it clear that he considered me an essential part of his project. He presented a detailed plan for my involvement, telling me that I would play the first and last matches of this camp, while there would be rotation in the other games to manage the players’ physical workload.

He even suggested that I should not travel with the team to Norway and Denmark, but I immediately rejected that proposal. I could not accept such a privilege because, as captain, I could not stay in Portugal while the team played abroad. In the end, the coach agreed with my position.

Everything continued normally until the day of the match against Norway. During lunch, one of the coach’s assistants told me that the coach wanted to speak to me. To my surprise, he asked whether I was ready to play for 30 minutes. Although this was not part of my recovery plan, I immediately agreed. He told me to get ready because I would be coming on.

Everyone knows what happened next. I began warming up at halftime, but the minutes passed and I was never brought on. As far as I was concerned, the coach had not kept his word.

After the match, I did not go over to acknowledge the supporters. That was a mistake for which I take full responsibility, and I apologize to everyone who supported us at the stadium.

Two days later, we had a face-to-face meeting with the coach and Simão Coutinho. The discussion was frank and unfiltered. We agreed that the only way to put this matter behind us was for the coach to speak publicly and explain the truth: that he had proposed the plan, that I had not asked for playing time, and that it had been a mistake to send me out to warm up without bringing me on.

Several talking points were even prepared for him to use at the press conference. They emphasized that I had been exemplary, loyal and professional, that I had never questioned his decisions, and that he wanted me to remain part of the national team.

However, the press conference did not go as agreed. In my view, the coach failed to honor the agreement, and this was the second time he had not kept his word. For that reason, I decided to leave the camp, because truth and keeping one’s word are, for me, the foundations of any relationship.

That same morning, during a conversation with the president of the Federation and the coach, I told them that if they no longer wanted me in the team, they only needed to say so openly. Their response was that my place remained in the Portugal national team.

In almost 25 years of my career, I have never interfered in any coach’s technical or tactical decisions. I have always respected their choices, but when a promise is not honored, I feel that I no longer belong there.

I also apologize to my teammates for leaving the camp. It was an action for which I take full responsibility. However, I felt that staying would harm the group, and I did what I have always said I would do if I no longer felt useful: I packed my bags and left.

I accept that the Portuguese Football Federation must assess and punish this action. As captain, my responsibility is even greater, and the rules must be the same for everyone.

I have heard many discussions about a farewell match and a dignified departure from the national team. I can promise the supporters that there will be time for one or more farewell matches. But when I think about the national team, I think first and foremost about competing and winning.

Therefore, if I am physically fit and playing regularly for my club, once I have served any suspension that may be imposed on me, I will be ready, as always, to play and win for Portugal.

This is my truth, and nothing more.”
