SAIBARI STRIKE FIRES MOROCCO TO VITAL WORLD CUP VICTORY

The match winner also etched his name into the history books. Saibari became only the second African player ever to score in each of his first two FIFA World Cup appearances, joining Egyptian legend Mohamed Salah, who achieved the feat during the 2018 World Cup.

Boston, USA – 19 June 2026

Morocco secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Scotland in Group C of the FIFA World Cup 2026™, thanks to a stunning early goal from Ismael Saibari, who continued his remarkable form on the biggest stage.

The Atlas Lions struck after just two minutes at Boston Stadium, recording not only the fastest goal of Morocco’s World Cup history but also the quickest goal scored so far at the 2026 tournament. The victory moves Morocco to the top of Group C with four points, strengthening their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.

Lightning Start from Saibari

Morocco could hardly have wished for a better opening. A perfectly weighted pass from Brahim Diaz split the Scottish defense, allowing Saibari to burst through on goal. The PSV Eindhoven midfielder controlled the ball brilliantly before unleashing a powerful finish past goalkeeper Angus Gunn and into the roof of the net.

The strike immediately silenced the Scottish supporters and gave Morocco the perfect platform to execute their tactical game plan.

Morocco Control the Tempo

After taking the lead, Morocco remained disciplined and organized. Scotland gradually settled into the match and enjoyed spells of possession, but the Atlas Lions consistently looked dangerous on the counterattack.

Early in the second half, Saibari nearly doubled the advantage when his deflected effort crashed against the crossbar following excellent work down the left flank by Bilal El Khannouss.

Moments later, El Khannouss himself came close to scoring, narrowly missing at the near post from an Achraf Hakimi corner, while Gunn was forced into another important save.

Scotland Push for an Equaliser

Scotland responded with determination and dominated large portions of the final 15 minutes. Led by captain John McGinn, alongside Ben Doak and Scott McTominay, the Scots launched wave after wave of attacks in search of an equaliser.

However, Morocco's defensive structure remained solid. The Atlas Lions absorbed the pressure expertly and managed the closing stages with maturity and composure to secure all three points.

Historic Achievement for Saibari

The match winner also etched his name into the history books. Saibari became only the second African player ever to score in each of his first two FIFA World Cup appearances, joining Egyptian legend Mohamed Salah, who achieved the feat during the 2018 World Cup.

His outstanding display earned him the Superior Player of the Match award.

Reactions Steve Clarke (Scotland Head Coach)

"Thought we were good. Terrible start but the reaction to that was good."

Clarke admitted that conceding so early made the task difficult but praised his players for fighting back and competing throughout the match. The Scottish manager's main frustration was his side's inability to create a clear-cut scoring opportunity despite their late pressure.

Morocco Coaching Staff

Morocco manager Mohamed Ouahbi praised his team's tactical discipline and defensive organization.

The coaching staff highlighted the importance of remaining compact against Scotland's physical style while utilizing their technical quality and speed on the counterattack. They also commended the players for maintaining concentration under intense late pressure.
