Spain Plans Its Future with Luis de la Fuente: Contract Until the 2030 World Cup

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) wants to extend head coach Luis de la Fuente’s contract until the end of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

According to Spanish newspaper Diario AS, RFEF president Rafael Louzán aims to guarantee continuity and technical stability for the national team ahead of one of the most important periods in Spanish football history.

The 2030 World Cup will be hosted primarily by Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Therefore, federation officials want De la Fuente to lead the world champions into this special tournament.

The coach’s current contract runs until the end of UEFA Euro 2028. Formal negotiations over a new agreement are expected to begin after the summer break.

The extension would represent a direct reward for the historic success De la Fuente has achieved as head coach of La Roja.

He took charge of Spain in 2022, replacing Luis Enrique. Within a relatively short period, he built a young, competitive team capable of dominating on the international stage.

Under his leadership, Spain won the UEFA Nations League in 2023 and the European Championship in 2024. The high point of this remarkable period came at the 2026 World Cup, where La Roja were crowned world champions for the second time in their history.

The RFEF believes De la Fuente is the right person to continue the project, prepare the team for Euro 2028 and then lead it into the 2030 World Cup.

The objective is clear: preserve the core of the current squad, gradually integrate emerging talents and build a team capable of defending its world title in front of its own supporters.

If the two sides reach an agreement, Luis de la Fuente will have the opportunity to lead Spain at a World Cup on home soil while pursuing another historic chapter for Spanish football.
