SPAIN SEND A WORLD CUP STATEMENT AS YAMAL MAKES HISTORY

The victory puts Spain firmly back on track in Group H. A draw against Uruguay in their final group match will be enough to secure qualification for the Round of 32.

Spain responded in emphatic fashion to their disappointing opening draw by producing a dominant 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in Group H of the FIFA World Cup 2026™, sending a clear warning to the rest of the tournament.

After being frustrated in a shocking 0-0 stalemate against Cabo Verde in their first match, Luis de la Fuente's side arrived in Atlanta determined to prove their credentials as one of the favorites for the title. They did exactly that with an overwhelming display of attacking football.

Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal opened the scoring after just 10 minutes, finishing expertly from a Mikel Oyarzabal cross. The goal immediately settled Spain and unleashed a wave of relentless pressure that Saudi Arabia struggled to contain.

Only eleven minutes later, Oyarzabal doubled Spain's advantage with a close-range finish before adding his second goal just three minutes later, putting La Roja 3-0 ahead before the first cooling break.

Spain continued to dominate possession and create opportunities throughout the match. Oyarzabal came close to completing a first-half hat-trick, striking the crossbar and narrowly missing with another effort as Saudi Arabia desperately tried to limit the damage.

The fourth goal arrived shortly after halftime when Saudi defender Hassan Altambakti inadvertently turned Marc Cucurella's volley into his own net after an initial save from goalkeeper Mohammed Alowais.

With the result secure, Spain comfortably managed the remainder of the match while resting several key players ahead of their decisive final group-stage clash against Uruguay.

🌟 Yamal Joins Messi in World Cup History

The match will also be remembered for another milestone achieved by Barcelona starlet Lamine Yamal.

At 18 years and 343 days old, Yamal became the eighth-youngest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history and the second-youngest Spanish player ever to score at the tournament, behind only Gavi.

Even more remarkably, Yamal scored his first World Cup goal 14 days younger than Lionel Messi was when the Argentine legend scored his first World Cup goal.

Both players wore the iconic No. 19 shirt during their first World Cup appearances, adding another fascinating similarity between two of football's most gifted young talents.

🗣️ Yamal: "It's a Dream"

Speaking after the match, Yamal expressed his joy at scoring on the biggest stage in football.

"I've always dreamed of playing at a World Cup. To score in my first match as a starter is incredible. I watched the last World Cup from a classroom, and now I'm scoring with my family in the stands. It's a dream."
