SPECIAL REPORT/ Who Are Egnatia’s Opponents? The History, Honours and European Journey of Lillestrøm

By Elite Sport Vizion. By Albano Kolonjari ·

Egnatia are preparing for one of the most important ties in the club’s history. The Albanian champions will face Lillestrøm SK in the UEFA Europa League play-off round, aiming to secure a place in the league phase.

The first leg will be played at Arena Egnatia in Rrogozhinë on August 20, 2026, at 7:00 PM local time. The return match is scheduled for August 27 at Åråsen Stadion in Norway.

But who are Lillestrøm, the opponents standing between Egnatia and a historic qualification?

A club with more than a century of history

Lillestrøm Sportsklubb was founded on April 2, 1917, following the merger of two local clubs. The team represents the city of Lillestrøm, located close to the Norwegian capital, Oslo.

The club plays its home matches at Åråsen Stadion, a ground known for its strong atmosphere and stands located close to the pitch.

Lillestrøm’s traditional colours are yellow and black. For this reason, the team are known as “Kanarifuglene,” meaning “The Canaries,” or simply “Fugla” — “The Birds.”

The club’s most passionate supporters are organised under the name “Kanarifansen,” considered one of the best-known fan groups in Norwegian football.

Five league titles and seven Norwegian Cups

Lillestrøm are one of the most successful clubs in the history of Norwegian football.

They have won the Norwegian championship five times, lifting the title in 1959, 1976, 1977, 1986 and 1989.

The club have also won the Norwegian Cup seven times: in 1977, 1978, 1981, 1985, 2007, 2017 and 2025.

Lillestrøm’s most successful period came during the 1970s and 1980s, when the team regularly competed for domestic honours and represented Norway in European competitions.

The club also hold a remarkable Norwegian record. From 1975 until 2019, Lillestrøm played 45 consecutive seasons in the top flight without being relegated.

The extraordinary 2025 season

Following a difficult period and relegation to the second tier, Lillestrøm responded strongly during the 2025 campaign.

The team completed the second-division season without losing a match and secured an immediate return to the Eliteserien. At the same time, they won the Norwegian Cup and completed their entire league and cup campaign without suffering a defeat.

It was a rare achievement in the history of Norwegian football. Their Norwegian Cup victory earned Lillestrøm a place in the 2026–27 UEFA Europa League.

Tom Lund, the eternal legend

No account of Lillestrøm’s history would be complete without Tom Lund, the club’s greatest player and one of the most important figures in Norwegian football history.

Lund spent his entire playing career with Lillestrøm, representing the club from 1967 until 1982. He helped the team rise from the lower divisions to the summit of Norwegian football.

Despite interest from major European clubs, including Ajax and Bayern Munich, Lund chose to remain loyal to his hometown team.

His fear of flying was another well-known part of his life. For some matches outside Norway, he preferred to travel by car.

After retiring as a player, Lund also served as Lillestrøm’s coach. A statue in his honour stands outside Åråsen Stadion.

Tom Lund passed away on May 23, 2026, at the age of 75. His death was deeply mourned not only by Lillestrøm but throughout Norwegian football.

The historic victory over Ajax

Lillestrøm have a long history in European competitions. Although they have never won an international trophy, the Norwegian side have recorded several notable results.

Their most famous European night remains the 2–0 victory over Ajax in the 1977–78 European Cup.

Led by Tom Lund, Lillestrøm stunned one of Europe’s biggest clubs. However, Ajax won the return match 4–0 in Amsterdam and progressed 4–2 on aggregate.

Lillestrøm reached the second round of the European Cup in both 1978–79 and 1987–88. Under the competition’s format at the time, this placed them among the final 16 teams.

In 1987, the Norwegian side eliminated Linfield before facing Bordeaux. Lillestrøm held the French club to a goalless draw at home but were eliminated following the return leg in France.

Encounters with Torino and Deportivo Alavés

Another significant result came in the 1993–94 European Cup Winners’ Cup, when Lillestrøm defeated Torino 2–1 in Italy. Despite that impressive away victory, the Norwegian side did not advance.

In the 2000–01 UEFA Cup, Lillestrøm reached the second round. During that campaign, they drew 2–2 at Åråsen Stadion against Deportivo Alavés, who went on to reach the final of the competition.

During the 1997–98 UEFA Cup campaign, Lillestrøm won three of their four matches but were again unable to progress deep into the tournament.

Their most recent European appearance before the current campaign came in the 2022–23 UEFA Conference League. Lillestrøm were eliminated by Belgian side Royal Antwerp in the third qualifying round.

What kind of opponents await Egnatia?

Lillestrøm possess many of the traditional characteristics associated with Norwegian football: physical strength, a high tempo, tactical discipline and a considerable threat from set pieces.

The team often employ a direct style of play and look to dominate aerial duels. The Norwegian players press aggressively and try to move the ball into the opposition penalty area as quickly as possible.

Egnatia must be particularly careful when defending corners, free kicks and second balls. Controlling midfield and avoiding unnecessary mistakes near their penalty area will be crucial.

However, Lillestrøm are not unbeatable. Their recent results have exposed defensive problems and a lack of consistency—weaknesses the Albanian champions will attempt to exploit.

Egnatia seek another miracle in Rrogozhinë

Nevil Dede’s team enter this tie after recording one of the greatest European victories by an Albanian club.

Egnatia overturned a 3–1 first-leg defeat against Shamrock Rovers by winning 5–1 in Rrogozhinë, advancing 6–4 on aggregate.

Daniel Adjessa, Alessandro Albanese and Ildi Gruda have demonstrated that Egnatia possess the speed and attacking quality needed to trouble any opponent.

The Albanian champions have scored 11 goals in their last three European matches at Arena Egnatia. That record has turned their home stadium into one of the team’s most powerful weapons.

History against ambition

On paper, Lillestrøm have more history, more trophies and significantly greater experience in European competitions. Egnatia, however, have already shown that differences on paper can disappear on the pitch.

For the Albanian champions, this tie represents the greatest opportunity in the club’s history. Eliminating Lillestrøm would send Egnatia into the UEFA Europa League league phase—an extraordinary achievement for the club from Rrogozhinë and for Albanian football.

Standing in their way is a 109-year-old club supported by a rich history and strong tradition. On the other side are an ambitious Egnatia team who have already demonstrated that they are not afraid to write their own history.

On August 20 at Arena Egnatia, Lillestrøm’s history will come face-to-face with the European dream of the Albanian champions.
