UEFA ALERT / Egnatia–Midtjylland in doubt: training disrupted, match could move to another stadium
The Egnatia–Midtjylland match, scheduled for Thursday, October 15, at 18:45, faces uncertainty over whether it can take place at Air Albania Stadium. Reports of security concerns in the Albanian capital have raised the possibility of a venue change. At the time of writing, no official decision confirming a relocation or postponement had been found in the sources reviewed. According to information provided by RTSH Sport reporter Sabina Mete from the stadium, Egnatia cancelled its training session, while Midtjylland spent only 15 minutes on the pitch. These developments raise further questions about preparations for the match, although cancelling a training session does not itself mean the fixture has been cancelled. UEFA’s official website continues to list Arena Kombëtare in Tirana as the match venue. Austrian referee Stefan Ebner has been appointed to officiate, with Harald Lechner serving as the video assistant referee. What happens if the match cannot take place there? The 2026/27 Conference League regulations allow UEFA to change the stadium, city, date or kick-off time when security, infrastructure or organisational problems arise. UEFA’s administration must approve any alternative stadium. In urgent circumstances, the match may also be played without spectators. These are options permitted by the regulations, rather than confirmed decisions concerning Egnatia–Midtjylland. If a decision that the match cannot start is made on matchday, the general rule is for it to be played the following day. In this case, that would mean October 16, provided conditions allow. If that is also impossible, UEFA sets another date and approves the stadium and revised kick-off time. Could Egnatia lose the match by forfeit? A match being unable to take place for security reasons does not automatically result in a forfeit. Article 29 provides for a forfeited match when a club refuses to play or UEFA’s disciplinary bodies find it responsible for the match not taking place or not being completed. The information presented so far provides no basis for declaring Egnatia responsible in that way. Expenses also depend on responsibility. If a club causes the change, it must cover its own costs and the additional travel, meals and accommodation expenses incurred by the opposing club and match officials. If neither club is at fault, each party bears its own expenses. For supporters who have purchased tickets, the organisers still need to clarify whether those tickets would remain valid at a different stadium or on another date, and what refund procedure would apply. Egnatia–Midtjylland remains scheduled, but its staging at the current venue is in doubt. Any change must be officially confirmed by UEFA and the organisers.
