USA SHINE IN SEATTLE, BOOK PLACE IN THE KNOCKOUT STAGE

Freeman Seals Victory as USA Defeat Australia 2-0 and Advance to the Round of 32

By FIFA @ ELITE SPORT VIZION ·

Seattle, USA – The United States national team continued its impressive FIFA World Cup 2026™ campaign by defeating Australia 2-0 and securing qualification for the Round of 32 with one group-stage match still to play.

In front of a vibrant crowd at Seattle Stadium, Mauricio Pochettino’s side delivered another energetic and dominant performance, overwhelming the Socceroos from the opening whistle.

Fast Start for the Americans

The USA took the lead in the 11th minute through an own goal. Folarin Balogun produced a brilliant run down the left flank and delivered a dangerous low cross that Australian defender Cameron Burgess inadvertently turned into his own net.

The Americans maintained their relentless pressure and doubled their advantage just before halftime. A deflected effort from Sergiño Dest looped into the six-yard box, where Alex Freeman reacted quickest to head the ball past goalkeeper Patrick Beach for his first-ever FIFA World Cup goal.

Victory Without Pulisic

The result was even more impressive considering the absence of star player Christian Pulisic, who missed the match due to a calf injury.

Despite losing their captain and talisman, the United States looked confident, organized, and dangerous throughout the contest, producing one of their best displays of the tournament so far.

Balogun was a constant threat to the Australian defense and was deservedly named the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match.

Australia Unable to Respond

Tony Popovic’s side struggled to cope with the intensity and pressing of the Americans. Australia improved after the break and enjoyed more possession, but they failed to find a way through a disciplined U.S. defense that recorded its first clean sheet in ten matches.

Historic Achievement

With the victory, the United States recorded back-to-back FIFA World Cup wins for the first time since the inaugural tournament in 1930.

The Americans also became the first team in World Cup history to benefit from own goals in consecutive matches.

Post-Match Reactions

Mauricio Pochettino (USA Head Coach):

"It was a fantastic game and a very good first half. We dominated the match. I’m extremely happy for our fans. Christian couldn’t play, but if we want to win this competition, we need the entire squad."

Tony Popovic (Australia Head Coach):

"They were quicker, stronger, and won every duel. When that happens, it becomes very difficult to gain control of the game."

Folarin Balogun (USA Forward):

"We wanted to start fast and we did exactly that. I'm very happy for Alex Freeman. He's a humble guy and fully deserved his moment. Now we want to finish the group stage by beating Türkiye."
