Vinicius Jr Rescues Brazil as Morocco Earn Valuable Draw in World Cup Clash

By FIFA @ ELITE SPORT VIZION ·

Brazil and Morocco played out an entertaining 1-1 draw in a highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026™ Group C encounter, with standout goals from Vinicius Jr and Ismael Saibari lighting up a packed stadium in New York New Jersey.

The meeting brought together two of the tournament's most respected sides: the five-time world champions Brazil and Morocco, the history-making Qatar 2022 semi-finalists who became the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final.

Morocco struck first in the 21st minute through a moment of quality from both Brahim Diaz and Ismael Saibari. Diaz threaded a perfectly weighted pass through the heart of Brazil's defence, allowing Saibari to race clear before delicately lifting the ball over the advancing Alisson to give the Atlas Lions a surprise lead.

Brazil responded 11 minutes later thanks to the brilliance of Vinicius Jr. Receiving the ball from Bruno Guimaraes on the left side of the penalty area, the Real Madrid star appeared to have little room to operate. However, he cut inside onto his right foot and unleashed a powerful strike that flew past goalkeeper Yassine Bounou and into the net.

The Seleção pushed for a winner before the break, with Lucas Paqueta coming close through an acrobatic effort, but Bounou reacted superbly to tip the attempt away.

The second half continued at a high tempo. Vinicius created another excellent opportunity with a clever cut-back for Raphinha, but Bounou was once again equal to the task. At the other end, Alisson produced crucial saves during stoppage time, first diving to deny Neil El Aynaoui's long-range effort before quickly recovering to smother Ayoube Amaimouni's rebound.

Despite chances for both sides, neither team could find a decisive goal as the points were shared.

Key Stat

This was the first Brazil match in which Vinicius Jr scored and the Seleção failed to win. In his previous eight scoring appearances for the national team, Brazil had emerged victorious every time.

The Brazilian forward was named Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match after delivering a stunning equaliser and posing a constant threat throughout the contest.

Reaction

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted he was not fully satisfied with his team's performance.

"I think we didn't start very well, I'm a little worried. We lost a lot of duels and possession, but we improved in the second half of a difficult match, because Morocco is a good team. In the first half, we had difficulty getting out of the pressure, we could have had more control. Satisfied? Not really. I expected a better start. But things can happen. Now I'm going to focus on the next game."

The draw leaves Group C finely balanced, with both nations taking positives from a hard-fought contest as they continue their World Cup campaigns.
