ZINEDINE ZIDANE: A FRENCH SUPERSTAR READY TO LEAD A NEW GENERATION OF LES BLEUS?

FIFA. FROM WORLD CUP HERO TO POTENTIAL FRANCE COACH. Zidane’s official Real Madrid record supports the 11-trophy total, including three European Cups/Champions Leagues, two league titles, two Club World Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and two Spanish Super Cups.

Zinedine Zidane is more than a legend of French football. He is a World Cup hero, a Ballon d’Or winner, one of the greatest midfielders the game has ever seen and, as a coach, a proven winner on European football’s biggest stage.

Now, as Didier Deschamps prepares to bring his extraordinary 14-year reign with France to an end, attention is inevitably turning toward Zidane and the possibility of a new era for Les Bleus.

The idea is fascinating: Zidane on the touchline, Kylian Mbappé leading the attack, and one of the deepest talent pools in world football chasing another FIFA World Cup title.

FROM WORLD CUP HERO TO POTENTIAL FRANCE COACH

Zidane already knows what it means to carry the expectations of an entire nation.

At the 1998 FIFA World Cup, he scored twice in the final against Brazil as France became world champions for the first time. Two years later, he helped Les Bleus conquer UEFA EURO 2000, cementing his place among the greatest players in French football history.

His international career also ended on football’s grandest stage. Zidane inspired France to the 2006 World Cup final and was awarded the Golden Ball as the tournament’s outstanding player.

As a player, he possessed elegance, extraordinary technique, vision and an ability to dominate the biggest occasions. As a manager, he demonstrated another quality: the ability to win.

THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE KING

Zidane's managerial career at Real Madrid was extraordinary.

Across two spells in charge, he won 11 major trophies, including:

• 3 UEFA Champions League titles • 2 La Liga titles • 2 FIFA Club World Cups • 2 UEFA Super Cups • 2 Spanish Super Cups

His greatest achievement came between 2016 and 2018, when Real Madrid won three consecutive Champions League titles under his leadership.

That historic run demonstrated Zidane's ability to prepare a team for high-pressure knockout football. He also showed that he could manage a dressing room filled with global superstars and enormous personalities.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale, Luka Modrić, Toni Kroos and Sergio Ramos were among the elite players he successfully guided in Madrid.

Managing France would present a similar challenge.

ZIDANE AND MBAPPÉ: A NEW DREAM FOR FRANCE

The prospect of Zidane working with Kylian Mbappé would immediately become one of the biggest stories in international football.

Mbappé is already one of the defining players of his generation and has built an extraordinary World Cup legacy. Under Zidane, France could potentially enter a new tactical and psychological era.

Zidane's strength has never been about imposing one rigid football philosophy. His Real Madrid teams demonstrated tactical flexibility, defensive organisation and freedom for decisive attacking players.

That adaptability could prove particularly valuable with a French squad containing world-class attacking talent.

A system designed to maximise Mbappé while creating greater attacking freedom around players such as Ousmane Dembélé could make Les Bleus even more dangerous.

A DIFFERENT CHALLENGE

Success, however, would not be guaranteed.

International management is fundamentally different from club football. A national-team coach has limited training time and must build tactical understanding during short international windows.

The World Cup itself offers almost no margin for error. One poor performance in a knockout match can end four years of preparation.

Zidane would also face the challenge of following Deschamps, the coach who transformed France into one of international football's most consistently successful teams.

The transition from Deschamps' disciplined and pragmatic approach to Zidane's methods would therefore be one of the most fascinating aspects of a potential new era.

CAN ZIDANE BRING THE WORLD CUP BACK TO FRANCE?

Few potential coaches would arrive with Zidane's combination of footballing authority, tournament experience and personal connection to French football.

He knows how to win as a player.

He knows how to win as a manager.

And, perhaps most importantly, he knows how to manage superstars when the pressure is at its highest.

France possesses extraordinary talent. Mbappé remains capable of defining the biggest matches, while another generation of French players continues to emerge.

Nothing in international football can guarantee another World Cup.

But if Zinedine Zidane becomes the man chosen to lead Les Bleus, the combination of Zidane's winning pedigree, Mbappé's generational talent and France's extraordinary squad depth would ensure that a new French era begins with enormous expectations.

The man who helped bring France its first World Cup as a player could soon have the opportunity to chase football's greatest trophy again—this time from the touchline.

Zinedine Zidane and France: a legendary story that may still have another historic chapter to write.
